Welcome to Cohesion Social Justice Project. We proudly collaborate with international volunteers through WorkAway, a platform deeply aligned with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These global goals, adopted in 2015, serve as our guiding principles to create positive change in the areas of People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnership. Our efforts resonate with the SDGs, particularly in addressing issues related to inequality, justice, and sustainable communities.
Addressing Systemic Challenges
In the state of Mississippi, an alarming number exceeding 400 individuals grappling with severe mental health challenges find themselves in a state of profound neglect within the confines of correctional facilities. These individuals, predominantly diagnosed with conditions such as schizophrenia or meeting criteria for intellectual disability, necessitate competency restoration at the State Hospital. Tragically, their plight is exacerbated by prolonged waiting periods, often spanning 2-3 years, before securing a bed in the State Hospital, perpetuating a distressing cycle of deteriorating mental health.
This protracted wait significantly exacerbates the severity of their illnesses, with some individuals reaching a debilitated state upon admission, marked by an inability to communicate. Moreover, the extended duration amplifies the legal ramifications for these individuals, delaying the resolution of charges stemming from even minor offenses. This egregious circumstance underscores a systemic failure, wherein vulnerable individuals endure prolonged suffering, both from the ravages of mental illness and an unresponsive legal system.
Mental Illness and Incarceration
Rehabilitative Approaches to Drug-Related Offenses
Our project recognizes addiction as a complex mental health condition requiring support and treatment rather than punishment. We strive to shift the narrative around drug-related offenses, emphasizing the importance of addressing the root causes of substance abuse through rehabilitative and therapeutic approaches.
We actively advocate for the adoption of rehabilitative programs over punitive measures for individuals involved in drug-related offenses. Our focus is on developing effective and evidence-based programs that address addiction, provide mental health support, and offer pathways to recovery.
In states like Mississippi, where individuals may face disproportionately long sentences for drug offenses, we highlight the alarming discrepancies in sentencing. Our advocacy aims to reform sentencing practices, advocating for fair, just, and proportional consequences that prioritize rehabilitation over excessively harsh penalties.
Our project thrives on collaboration with international volunteers who share our dedication to social justice. Through WorkAway, we engage a diverse group of committed volunteers, each contributing unique perspectives and expertise to our initiatives. These volunteers play a pivotal role in advancing our mission, bringing a global outlook to the multifaceted challenges we address.
